Application of case-based learning method in internal medicine teaching of general family medicine

  • Objective General medicine is a comprehensive new clinical discipline,focused on human body.The general practitioner is the main body to provide general medical services.General medicine education aims to cultivate talents familiar with general medical diagnosis and treatment patterns and master the basic knowledge as well as clinical skills in general medicine.Internal medicine,for medical students,is a must professional knowledge,thus an indispensable part of the general medical teaching.This paper is a preliminary exploration for the methods of case-based learning in internal medicine teaching of general family medicine so as to provide references for future instruction. Methods Introduced in internal medicine teaching of general family medicine,the case-based learning method is guided by the teacher who selects and presents authentic cases.The teacher gives a lecture on internal medicine theory,on the basis of which the students are familiar with and grasp the knowledge and then the case is introduced,while students discuss around the case and every student get involved in the discussion,during which the students exercise their abilities.The teacher organizes the students in class discussion,provides guidance,and makes conclusions in the end.The teaching effectiveness is assessed by the results of test and the evaluation of the students. Results Case-based learning method could promote the students'learning interest and learning enthusiasm,improve students'learning initiative and enthusiasm,train the students'ability of language and words,enhance team collaboration and mutual assistance,and cultivate the students'clinical thinking ability and comprehensive ability. Conclusion Case-based learning method is suitable for internal medicine teaching in general medicine in general medical colleges and universities and to cultivate qualified general practitioners,which can be promoted in the future.
