Objective The low back pain commonly occurs in patients with senile osteoporosis. The patients often refuse to exercise due to fear of fracture and back pain, thus exacerbating osteoporosis. This study aims to investigate the effect of calcitonin as an adjuvant therapy on pain, bone mineral density(BMD) and bone metabolism indexes in senile osteoporosis patients with low back pain.
Methods A total of 80 senile osteoporosis patients with low back pain were divided into observation group(40 cases) and control group(40 cases) from February,2016 to January,2017.The patients of the control group received conventional therapy, while the patients of the observation group additionally received calcitonin therapy based on control group. The treatment time was 6 weeks. The clinical effect and changes of pain,BMD and bone metabolism indexes were compared between the two groups before and after treatment.
Results The total effective rate of the observation group was 92.50%,and of the control group was 75.00%,total effective rate of the observation group was significantly higher than that of the control group(
P<0.05);The VAS score of low back pain decreased significantly after treatment in both groups(
P<0.05),and VAS score of the observation group decreased more significantly than that of the control group(
P<0.05);The BMD of L
2-4 and femoral neck increased significantly after the treatment in both groups(
P<0.05),and the BMD of L
2-4 and femoral neck of the observation group increased more significantly than that of control group(
P<0.05);The level of 1,25-(OH)
2D
3 of bone metabolism indexes increased significantly after the treatment in both groups(
P<0.05),the level of PTH decreased significantly after the treatment in both groups (
P<0.05),and the difference in the level of 1,25-(OH)
2D
3 and PTH between the two groups was significant(
P<0.05).
Conclusion Calcitonin as an adjuvant therapy can improve the clinical curative effect, reduce low back pain, and regulate BMD and bone metabolism in senile osteoporosis patients with low back pain.
