Objective To survey the epidemiological characteristics of unintentional injuries among hospitalized children in ICU.
Methods The retrospective study included 1 282 children of 0 to 14 years treated for unintentional injuries from ICU of Yuying Children’s Hospital between 2005 and 2014.
Results Total 1 282 cases of children with unintentional injuries accounted for 27.86% of the hospitalized cases in ICU for the same period.Boys had a higher incidence of injury than that of girls with a ratio of 1.85∶1.The injury cases were mainly in 1-3 age group(39.63%).The unintentional injuries mainly occurred from 14:00 to 19:00 that 16:00 was the peak time.The number and rate of unintentional injury were the highest in summer(from July to September).The places in turn were in public places(53.74%),at home(45.55%) and at school(0.7%).The unintentional injuries of different age groups occurred in different places.Parent’s occupation in turn were workers(mainly engaged in manual labor),private owners,professional technicians and administrators.The top five causes of unintentional injury were traffic accident(37.13%),falls from height(28.94%),poisoning(9.20%),drowning(7.64%),and falling injuries(7.02%).The unintentional injury rates varied considerably with the age.The healed rate of this group was 35.80%,improved(50.08%),not improved(11.08%),and death(3.04%).Significant differences existed in the number of inpatients,types of occurrence,healed and death,hospitalization expenses between the Comparison of two groups before and after 5 years.
Conclusion The unintentional injuries of hospitalized children in ICU are related with gender,time and season,occupation of parents and so on.The unintentional injury in different age groups shows the specificity in places and types of injuries.
