Objective Left ventricular hypertrophy(LVH) is a common complication of hypertension patients. It is not clear to reverse LVH with hypotensive drugs. In order to evaluate and compare valsartan and benzene sulfonic acid amlodipine to treat high blood pressure and reverse LVH.
Methods We selected 240 elderly patients with mild and moderate hypertension and LVH in Chinese population of Shandong province. The 120 patients were randomly selected andgiven benzene sulfonic acid amlodipine(5- 10 mg/d) or valsartan(80- 160 mg/d). Theblood pressure of patients before and after treatment was monitored by cardiac ultrasound examination to calculate left ventricular end-diastolic diameter(LVDd),interventricular septum thickness(IVST),left ventricular posterior wall thickness(PWT) and left ventricular mass index(LVMI) changes.
Results In 240 patients with LVH,systolic blood pressure(SBP),diastolic blood pressure(DBP),and LVMI were significantly decreased in all patients(P > 0. 05). The blood pressure drops no statistical significance for drug category. By using multiple linear regression, the degree of LVMI decline significantly greater in the patients with valsartan, the difference is statistically significant(F=6. 713,P=0. 012).
Conclusion The two drugs can significantly reduce the blood pressure of patients and reverse left ventricular hypertrophy, and the effect of valsartan is better.
